Streamlining Lamb Management with Shepherdsmate and the Gallagher HR5 EID Stick Reader

Tagging new born lambs and using the Gallagher HR5 EID Stick Reader to register lambs to their mother.

We’re always looking for ways to improve the efficiency and accuracy of our record-keeping. The Gallagher HR5 EID stick reader offers a powerful solution for animal performance monitoring, particularly when it comes to linking lambs to their mothers and tracking vital traits.

Linking Lambs and Mothers with Precision

This innovative tool simplifies the process of recording essential information about lambs and their dams, enabling better traceability and informed decision-making. Rodney Belfour demonstrates how the HR5 streamlines this crucial aspect of flock management.

How it Works: A Step-by-Step Guide

  1. New Session Creation: Start by creating a new session on the HR5, giving it a descriptive name like “March lambing.”
  2. Trait Selection: Choose the traits you want to record for each animal. The HR5 allows you to track a wide range of characteristics, including mothering information, breed, colour, condition, birth weight, milk protein, sex, and sire.
  3. Mother Identification: Scan the tag of the ewe to identify her.
  4. Lamb Tagging and Scanning: Tag each lamb and scan its tag to link it to its mother.
  5. Data Recording: Record key information about the lamb, such as birth weight, milk protein percentage, sex, and sire.
  6. Multiple Offspring Handling: If a ewe has twins, triplets, or quads, repeat the scanning and data recording process for each lamb.
  7. Custom Trait Setup: The HR5 also allows you to set up custom traits specific to your operation, such as “lambing difficulty.”

Benefits of the HR5 System

  • Enhanced Traceability: Accurately link lambs to their mothers for improved tracking and management.
  • Comprehensive Data Logging: Record a wide range of traits for each animal, providing valuable insights into their performance.
  • Elimination of Paper Records: Streamline your record-keeping and reduce the risk of errors.
  • Informed Decision-Making: Use the collected data to make better choices about which animals to keep and breed.
